Fox hunting:  Is now the time to have a review? I think Cameron is totally out of touch thinking after only 7 years we need a review of a cruel sport. One of the arguments for the review is that more people are taking up the sport since they have had to start looking for other ways to have fun. Isn’t it more likely that since they have stopped pulling animals apart using other animals [which is barbaric and I find unthinkable as most people do] more people find it an acceptable sport now the cruel element has gone, so they can now go out horse and hound and really enjoy going through the countryside chasing an artificial scent . I think we need to keep an eye on this review as there is no reason for it.  Fox numbers haven’t gone up and in any case more humane ways of reducing the numbers are available.  Perhaps Cameron is under pressure from some of his friends in parliament to bring back a blood sport which to my mind should have been banned long, long ago.

Extracts from the minutes of Hull Preparative Meeting

held on Sunday, 8th January 2012

4.     Premises Committee Business:

The following proposals of our Premises Committee, which met on December 13th, have been brought to us by John B and John H for our consideration: -

a)       Room charges

The committee agreed these should be raised by 50p an hour for each room as from 1/6/12. On this basis the charges will become £12.00 per hour for the Meeting Room, £5.50 per hour for the Horsley Room, and £10.00 for all other rooms.  Regular hirers have been contacted about these proposals and a positive response has been received.  John B agreed to send the letter he had drafted to affected groups (copy attached). We agree to these proposals.

b)      Appraisal of Property Expenses for Area Meeting

John B has received an e-mail from Brian F, Clerk of Area Meeting Finance Committee, which asks Local Meetings to appraise their likely property expenses for 2012 and forward details to him before February. Essentially, this would apply to external and structural items. So, for Hull, the committee suggests that the list should include: the cycle hoops (as agreed in our last PM on Dec 4th); external painting of the front porch; and a handrail on the right hand side of the ramp as one walks towards the main entrance (to increase safety for those with disabilities, and for everybody in case of icy conditions). John F is looking into costings of these items, on behalf of Premises Committee.  We agree to these suggestions and ask the Premises Committee to forward these property expenses to Brian F.

c)       Greening the Meeting House:  P-V Solar Panels

Despite the government’s announced withdrawal of its subsidy (which action has since been declared illegal in the courts and is now subject to appeal), power companies will still pay 21p, if not the 42p originally promised, for each unit of electricity generated and fed into the national grid. Furthermore, panel installation costs have come down significantly over the last few months. Premises Committee is therefore proposing that Hull PM approach Brian F to ask for financial support for the installation of an array of 16 P-V panels on the Meeting House roof (South facing).  The possible need to add any P-V panels to the Meeting House’s insurance was raised and should be explored.  Gill S knows of a Wakefield-based firm, AVC, who did a good job in installing panels at Swanland Church Hall.  Premises Committee would welcome any further suggestions of local firms involved in similar work.

This meeting feels that we should support this environmentally friendly venture and ask our Premises Committee to go ahead with their proposal.

d)      Floor covering in the Warden’s Flat

It is proposed that some of the carpet in the Warden’s flat be replaced. The Committee suggests that the same policy of hard flooring be adopted, as used for the rest of the Meeting House in 2011. We agree to this proposal and feel that the cost of this should be borne by the Meeting and not by the tenant. We ask the Premises Committee to make the necessary arrangements.

e)      Matters arising: Health & Safety and Insurance

Our Warden has: - arranged with the Fire Service for an inspection to check on public safety on our premises; arranged with the Health & Safety inspector for a visit to obtain registration of our premises for food preparation; and contacted Roger D concerning insurance and the need for an updated inventory.

We thank the Premises Committee for bringing these matters to our attention and we offer an especial word of thanks to John B for all the additional work which he has undertaken for the Meeting.

5.      Date of the next Preparative Meeting:

Our next Preparative Meeting will be held on Sun, 5th Feb 2012, after Meeting for Worship, as arranged.
